Denzel Washington named most favorite actor
American has voted Denzel Washington its favorite movie star for the second year in a row in an annual Harris Poll.
The actor has garnered much critical acclaim for his portrayals of several real-life figures, such as Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), Malcolm X (1992), Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in The Hurricane (1999), Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters (2007) and Frank Lucas in American Gangster (2007). The second position was gained by Tom Hanks. He is currently in theaters playing a hawkish Democrat in "Charlie Wilson's War." "I think what we're seeing here, is basically their types of movies," Regina Corso, director of the Harris Poll, said in a telephone interview. "If you think of Tom Hanks -- 'Charlie Wilson's War' notwithstanding -- but if you go back to the 'Forrest Gumps,' the 'Apollo 13s' -- those very traditional, American values-type movies, I think that's why we're seeing Republicans leaning more toward him." ![]() The fourth position was dedicated for Julia Roberts, the highest ranked actress on the list. Will Smith star of "I Am Legend" rounded out the top five. The top ten are: 1. Denzel Washington 2. Tom Hanks 3. Johnny Depp 4. Julia Roberts 5. Will Smith 6. John Wayne 7. Matt Damon 8. Sean Connery 9. Sandra Bullock 10. Bruce Willis Publication date: 18 January 2008 Source: Archive
