Hollywood filmmaker Michael Mann plans to reunite with his "Heat" star Robert De Niro on "Frankie Machine," a mob drama Mann is developing, Variety.com said.

De Niro will play a hit man who retires to run a bait shop only to be sucked back into the criminal underworld when he realizes someone wants him dead.

The film is an adaptation of Don Winslow's novel "The Winter of Frankie Machine."

De Niro, who starred in "The Godfather, Part II" and "GoodFellas," has avoided playing the mobsters that defined his early career but the trade paper said he decided to make an exception after he read the Winslow novel before it was published.

Mann's films include "Miami Vice," "Collateral," "The Insider" and "The Last of the Mohicans."  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
