Deborah Kerr was a Golden Globe award winning and six-time Academy Award nominated Scottish actress. She died at 86.

Kerr played Karen in From Here to Eternity (1953) for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

According to agent Anne Hutton, Kerr died on Tuesday in Suffolk, eastern England

"Her family was with her at the time," Ms Hutton said.

"She had suffered from Parkinson's disease for some time and had just had her 86th birthday and so was an elderly lady. She just slipped away."

Kerr's flame-haired beauty and image as an English rose made her a darling of Hollywood.
The American Film Institute acknowledged the iconic status of the scene from that film in which she and Burt Lancaster make love on a Hawaii beach amidst the crashing waves. The organization named it one of "AFI's top 100 Most Romantic Films" of all time.

Kerr long resided in Switzerland and Spain, but recently move back to her native Scotland after being diagnosed with the degenerative disorder.

She starred in more than 40 films spanning nearly 50 years in cinema.
