Sequel plans for The Departed

Moldova.ORG -- Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg says he was approached about a possible sequel to “The Departed”.

As Contactmusic reports, the film, which also bagged an Oscar nomination for famous director Martin Scorsese, gave Wahlberg one of his best roles to date and its success means a follow-up is now on the cards.

Speaking to EmpireOnline, the Planet of the Apes star said writer William Monahan was already fleshing out ideas for the sequel.

Wahlberg added it could also herald the inclusion of some other big-name actors after an original cast which included Jack Nicholson and Leonardo Di Caprio.

”They told me they wanted to try to do it and I said, 'Well, I enjoyed playing the character.' They're talking about bringing in [Robert] De Niro to play a senator or a congressman. You know, the corruption obviously going deeper and higher up the ranks - reaching up the political chain. So it'll be fun", said he.

One of the only problems with a sequel might be the bloody end to the original film, with many of the characters killed off, although the commercial and critical success mean another instalment is a possibility, particularly as Wahlberg even mooted the idea of a trilogy.
