Comedian Sarah Silverman may be best known to U.S. fans as offensive and arrogant, but she says that's not her -- just the character she invented.

The star of "The Sarah Silverman Show," set to premiere Thursday on Comedy Central, told the New York Post people are always referring to her as "potty-mouthed," but that isn't how she sees herself. She said her new show is "kind of like life imitating art."

"I have this character who sees herself so differently than other people see her," she said. "And that's definitely true with me, too."

As an example of how she is often misunderstood, Silverman recalled a joke she made in "The Aristocrats" -- the 2005 film about the world's most famous dirty joke. In the film, Silverman jokingly claimed that TV host Joe Franklin had once raped her -- and the joke led to talk of a lawsuit from Franklin.

"That was drama," Silverman told the paper. "It felt real, and sad. People will automatically not see it that way, but it was." // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
