Berlin (dpa) - Berlin is gearing up for its annual film festival in February with organizers announcing Friday plans to pay homage to the renowned American film director Arthur Penn.

The festival said that next year's Homage section would focus on Penn, who is considered one of the trailblazers of the New Hollywood having directed such movies as Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and Night Moves (1975).

"Arthur Penn's films of the 1960s and early 1970s reanimated the crisis-ridden American cinema," said festival director Dieter Kosslick. "He is a great director, who deeply influenced the American cinema d'auteur."

The announcement that the festival plans to honor Penn is the first major statement from the festival about next year's program.

The festival, which is one of the world's top three film festivals, is to take place between February 8 and 18.

As part of the Homage, Penn is to be awarded the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement on February 15. // © 2006 DPA
