The Mel Gibson’s new film - “Apocalypto”, which depicts the collapse of the Mayan empire angered members of the Central American culture. Indigenous activists in Guatemala accused Gibson of racism and branded his new flick "unrealistic", as itv.com reports.

"Gibson replays, in glorious big budget Technicolor, an offensive and racist notion that Maya people were brutal to one another long before the arrival of Europeans and thus they deserved, in fact, needed, rescue", said Ignacio Ochoa, director of the Nahual Foundation that promotes Mayan culture.

The Lethal Weapon star was also slammed for promoting stereotypes of the Mayan culture by showing scenes of scary-looking Mayans with bone piercings and scarred faces hurling spears and sacrificing humans.

Richard Hansen, an archeologist who Gibson consulted on the making of the film, says the director was careful to make sure it was authentic and historically accurate.

This is the second time Gibson landed himself into debate.

Two years ago the Hollywood actor and director angered representatives of the Jewish faith for his depiction of Jesus in “The Passion of Christ”.
