Paltrow: Americans live to work, Europeans work to live

Gwyneth Paltrow said she is "deeply upset" over claims she made anti-American remarks in a current interview to a Portuguese newspaper.

The 34-year-old supposedly said that "the British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans".

Paltrow, who is married to UK singer Chris Martin, told US magazine People she is "so proud to be American". Also the actress said her comments were "completely misconstrued" during a press conference she conducted in Spanish.

"I said that Europe is a much older culture and there's a difference. I always say in America, people live to work and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both", said Paltrow, who lives some of the time in London with Martin, quoted by BBC News.

“Obviously I need to go back to seventh grade Spanish," added the actress.

Paltrow also said she had not turned her back on her native country.

"I live in England half the time because I'm married to a British guy. It's not like I have left America. I am a New York girl, that's how I always think of myself and see myself“, added Gwyneth.
