TOKYO, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Noted Japanese screen and television actor Ken Ogata, whose new TV drama series was set to open this week, has died at age 71, sources told Kyodo.

The news service said the cause and the place where he died weren't immediately known.

Variety reported a private funeral took place Tuesday.

Ogata's famous films included the Ballad of Narayama,Vengeance is Mine,The Demon, and House on Fire, Kyodo reported.

The Tokyo native had attended a news conference Sept. 30 to announce his new TV drama series Garden of Wind, scheduled to start airing Thursday, the report said. He plays a doctor in that show.

'DWTS' star May-Treanor set for surgery

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. beach volleyball Olympic champion Misty May-Treanor said she needs surgery after injuring herself while rehearsing for Dancing with the Stars.

May-Treanor was hurt last week while practicing routines with her professional dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

It was announced on Monday's program that she wouldn't be returning to the dance competition series this season.

I ruptured my Achilles tendon and from that point on I knew I couldn't continue. I'm out and I'm really bummed, May-Treanor told People magazine. We don't know why these things happen. They could happen to anyone. I feel like I was only just beginning here.

The athlete is expected to undergo surgery this week, followed by nine months of rehabilitation.

I will be back -- on the volleyball court and maybe on the ballroom. I would come back to the ballroom if they asked me back, May-Treanor told People.

Lawyer: David Duchovny is out of rehab

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- David Duchovny's lawyer said the U.S. film and television actor has left the rehabilitation facility where he spent two months being treated for sex addiction.

Duchovny is best known for his roles on the TV shows Californication and The X-Files. He and his actress wife Tea Leoni have two children.

David has successfully completed his rehabilitation, Duchovny's lawyer told Usmagazine.com. He is out of rehab and will be starting a movie soon.

The celebrity news magazine said on its Web site that Duchovny and Leoni were seen together Sunday at the Czech Festival in New York.

Jolie faced her fears for 'Changeling'

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie said she frequently thought about her late mother while playing a woman whose son disappears in Changeling.

Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer last year.

My mother would fight that hard for her children, Jolie told the New York Daily News, comparing Bertrand to the crusading character she plays in the film.

(The role made me) confront my worst fear. It made me feel closer to my kids and grateful every night just to know where they are and that they're healthy. Making the phone call (in the film,) saying that my kid was kidnapped, was difficult. I don't even like saying it right now, she explained.

In the movie, Jolie plays a woman who fights to find and bring home her abducted son.

The actress, who attended the film's New York premiere with her longtime partner Brad Pitt, said their own six children produce the greatest chaos.

(They're) constantly loud, constantly messy, she told the Daily News, adding she and Pitt are working on having another, one way or another.
