Pro-U.S. publicity planned for Iraqi media

The U.S. Defense Department plans to spend up to $300 million for pro-American publicity in Iraqi media, officials say.

The plan, to be carried out over three years with private contractors, would include news stories, entertainment programs and public service ads geared to attract support for U.S. objectives and the Iraqi government, The Washington Post reported Friday.

New contracts were awarded last week to four contractors to expand and consolidate information/psychological operations far into the future in Iraq at a time when violence seems to be abating, reports say.

Uniformed communications specialists and contractors are said to be an integral part of U.S. military operations, the Post said.
