Singer Chapman's daughter, 5, killed

FRANKLIN, Tenn., May 22 (UPI) -- The 5-year-old daughter of singer Steven Curtis Chapman has died after being hit by a car in the driveway of the family's Tennessee home, police said.

A representative for the Tennessee Highway Patrol told The Tennessean that the Christian music star's youngest child, Maria, died Wednesday night after her teenage brother hit her with the Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving down the driveway of the family's rural Williamson County home.

"It appears to be a terrible accident,'' police spokeswoman Laura McPherson told the newspaper.

McPherson said the teen, whom she didn't identify, didn't see his sister in the driveway before the vehicle struck her.

No charges are expected to be brought against him, she said, adding the accident was witnessed by two other children and the entire family was home at the time.

David Cook is new 'American Idol'

He beat out his fellow finalist David Archuleta for the honor.

I am absolutely at a loss for words, Cook said, tearing up as he learned the news. This is amazing. Thank you.

The show's two-hour Season 7 finale featured performances by the finalists, the season's castoffs and recording stars Bryan Adams, Donna Summer, ZZ Top, George Michael, Graham Nash, OneRepublic, Carrie Underwood and the Jonas Brothers.

Jimmy Kimmel stopped by to poke fun of host Ryan Seacrest and judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, while actors Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black acted as backup singers in a virtual performance of Midnight Train to Georgia with Gladys Knight.

More than 97.5 million votes were cast for the finale, Usmagazine.com said.

Seacrest said on the show that Cook won by 12 million votes.

Jolie may have twins in France

CANNES, France, May 22 (UPI) -- Pregnant U.S. actress Angelina Jolie said at the Cannes Film Festival that, contrary to media reports, she hasn't definitely decided to give birth in France.

Asked by a Swedish journalist at a press conference promoting her new animated film Kung Fu Panda if she planned to have her new twins in France, Jolie replied: "I actually haven't completely decided, but we are certainly thinking of France.

(French) is a second language in our house, she explained. I'm still learning, so I'm not going to attempt it here today. ... But our children are starting to speak French and so being here is very good for them for their language at this time.

When the reporter suggested she have her babies in Sweden, Jolie quipped: Not at this time, but you never know. There's always ... more babies. Who knows? You know me.

Jolie and partner Brad Pitt are already the parents of four children.
