Joseph S. Miko, best known for his camerawork during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, has died in Los Angeles of blood cancer. He was 87.

Miko died April 28 at the Medical Center of the University of California, Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Miko helped document on film the revolution by Hungarians against the government and the invasion by Soviet troops that put down the rebellion in short order. He was forced to smuggle his footage out of Hungary, and his images were later used in a number of TV specials, including the CBS documentary, The 20th Century.

Director Klaudia Kovacs, who used Miko's footage in the documentary Torn from the Flag, said he was instrumental in revealing the revolution to the rest of the world.

Mr. Miko is one of the most credited and instrumental figures in recording the Hungarian Revolution, Kovacs told the Times.

The newspaper said Miko is survived by his wife, Victoria; his son, Joe; and two grandchildren.
