Harry Potter author JK Rowling felt suicidal after divorcing her first husband in the 1990s, the British Sunday Times has reported.

She had depression and got medical help after her divorce from a Portuguese journalist.

Rowling's circumstances in her mid-twenties were poor "and I really plummeted".

She sought help probably because of her daughter.

"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, not 'I'm a little bit miserable'."

She wrote the first Harry Potter as a single mother in poverty in Edinburgh.

She now has a personal wealth of more than $NZ1.3 billion.
