Anthony Minghella was an Academy Award-winning English film director, playwright and screenwriter. He died on 18 March 2008.

His credits includes: as a director  Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990), The English Patient (1996), Cold Mountain (2003) and others.
As a producer he is known for Iris (2001), The Interpreter (2005), Michael Clayton (2007), The Reader (2008).

Minghella died of a hemorrhage Tuesday at age 54 at London's Charing Cross Hospital.

His spokesman Jonathan Rutter said Minghella underwent surgery last week for a growth in his neck. He said the operation "seemed to have gone well. At 5 a.m. today he had a fatal hemorrhage."

"He was a sweet, warm, bright and funny man who was interested in everything from football to opera, films, music, literature, people and most of all his family whom he adored and to whom I send my thoughts and love," said  Jude Law, who appeared in Minghella's films "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "Cold Mountain" and "Breaking and Entering." "I shall miss him hugely."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Minghella was "one of Britain's greatest creative talents, one of our finest screenwriters and directors, a great champion of the British film industry and an expert on literature and opera."

Stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey and Ralph Fiennes also have paid moving tributes to Oscar-winning director.
