Photos - Gus Van Sant

Gus Van Sant

Gus Van Sant Jr. was born July 24, 1952 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He is an American Academy Award nominated film director, photographer, musician, and author.

Van Sant was nominated for a Best Director Academy Award in 1998 for Good Will Hunting, and won Best Director and Palme d'Or at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for his film Elephant.

Before breaking into the mainstream directing Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting (1997), Gus Van Sant staked out a reputation as an independent filmmaker specializing in artsy depictions of skid row lowlifes. Both Drugstore Cowboy (1989) and My Own Private Idaho (1991) used Hollywood actors but had the look, feel and limited commercial success of small, independent features.

In 1997 Van Sant published his first novel, Pink, and in 1998 he made waves with a quirky shot-by-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 hit Psycho.

He has released two CDs entitled "Gus van Sant" and "18 Songs About Golf". He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
