Stephen David Daldry was born on May 2, 1961 in Dorset, UK. He is an English movie director and producer.

In 1989, Daldry began directing stage productions at The Gate Theater in London, earning rave reviews for Damned in Despair in 1991. He remained with The Gate until 1992, when he became artistic director at the prestigious Royal Court Theater.

Daldry subsequently directed his first feature film, Dancer, re-titled Billy Elliot (2000). Set against the backdrop of the 1984 miners strike in northern England, the story tells of a young boy's desire to be a ballet dancer. Daldry followed his freshman triumph by directing an adaptation of the Michael Cunningham novel The Hours (2002).
