Mike Leigh

Mike Leigh was born on February 20, 1943 in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire. He is an English film and theatre director.

As director and screenwriter, Leigh works improvisationally with actors in the early stages of developing a film concept. His dramas interweave ordinary working-class life, social commentary, and humor.

He directed Life Is Sweet (1991), Naked (1993), and Secrets and Lies (1996). Leigh's ex-wife, the actress Alison Steadman, often appears in his films. His comedy-drama Topsy-Turvy (1999), a biopic of famed 19th-century opera composers Gilbert and Sullivan. This production is a delight from beginning to end, with fabulous performances from an ensemble cast and superb recreation of life behind the scenes of the Victorian theatre. All or Nothing (2002) was another depressing tale set on a London working-class housing estate over a long weekend.

He also directed a Academy Awards nominees drama Vera Drake (2004).

In September 1973 he married Alison Steadman but they divorced in 2001.
