Gavin Hood

Gavin Hood was born on May 12, 1963 in Johannesburg, South African. He is an actor, writer, producer and director.

He first came to the South African public's attention when he starred in the SABC TV production The Game.

In 1991 he went to Los Angeles to study screenwriting and directing at the University of California. While there, he won Screenwriting Award for his first screenplay, A Reasonable Man, based on the law case that had fascinated him. The judging panel included Steven Spielberg, Michael Douglas.

In 1998 he made a short film called The Storekeeper, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination.

His first feature film, A Reasonable Man, followed in 1999.

In 2003, Hood was approached to write and direct a screenplay based on the novel Tsotsi by acclaimed South African writer, Athold Fugard. About the violent life of a young Johannesburg gang leader, Tsotsi (2006).

He is set to direct Rendition, his first Hollywood feature, for New Line cinema. He has also been announced as the director of Wolverine, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.

Hood is married to actress Janine Eser.
