Scott filmed 'Gangster' in 180 locations

Director Ridley Scott says he shot "American Gangster" in nearly 180 locations to capture the look and feel of 1970s New York City.

"One hundred and eighty locations is ludicrous," Scott told reporters in New York recently.

"Thirty-five is reasonable. There's about 180 locations in the five boroughs and I've got in the movie ('Body of Lies,' which I'm filming) right now about 35-40 speaking parts. And ('Gangster') is 130 speaking parts, so there's like millions of pieces of minutiae, but that's what is so interesting about it," he explained. "I think what could easily take the position as a talking movie isn't. Somehow it's not. There's a lot of talking, but it doesn't feel like it's a talkie-talkie movie because there are millions of bits of parts which all seem to be driving in the same direction."

Scott said about 50 or 60 locations were in Harlem, where most of the story is set.

Co-starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, "American Gangster" was No. 1 at the U.S. box office when it opened during the weekend.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
