The Supreme Court in New Delhi has granted jailed Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt bail and he should be able to leave a Pune prison in the next couple of days.

Dutt had been sentenced to six years in jail for buying weapons from bombers who attacked Mumbai, formerly Bombay, in 1993.

He was one of 100 people convicted in connection with the blasts that killed 257 people.

The actor was cleared of conspiracy, but found guilty of illegally possessing a rifle and a pistol.

The Apex court, which earlier had granted the actor interim bail, Tuesday approved regular bail to Dutt and 16 others after the Central Bureau of Investigation did not oppose it.

The star was determined to be entitled to relief since he was found guilty of a lesser offense of possessing illegal weapons under the Arms Act, the Press Trust of India reported Tuesday.

Dutt has already spent about 18 months in jail.

The court said those granted bail would be released upon paying an unspecified bond and surrendering their passports, the PTI said.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
