Rarely seen Monroe dresses on exhibit
The white, halter-neck dress Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe wore in "The Seven Year Itch" is on display at a British hotel this week.
Believed to be worth more than $3 million, the dress is among the frocks designed for Monroe, owned by William Travilla and hidden away from the public for years, the Times of London said Tuesday. People can now see them at the Hilton Hotel in Brighton.
After the screen siren died in 1962, Travilla vowed to protect her memory and kept the costumes in his home, even as movie studios and private individuals sold what garments they had collected so they could profit from Monroe's fame.
Travilla died in 1990 and left his "Lost Collection" to his partner Bill Sarris.
Sarris has decided to exhibit the dresses for the first time to raise money for Alzheimer’s charities.
In addition to the sexy white dress, the show will also offer a glimpse at the gold lame gown and the pink satin dress Monroe wore in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."
Set to run through Sunday, the exhibition will also feature sketches and drawings from the design process. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
