'God' bleeped from 'The Queen'

ATLANTA, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Some international airline viewers of the movie "The Queen" didn't catch all the dialogue because the word "God" was excised from the version they saw.

The censored version -- shown by at least Atlanta-based Delta and New Zealand Air -- prompted complaints by passengers, the Birmingham (Ala.) News said.

A Delta spokeswoman said the airline had no choice because Miramax Films, distributor of the movie, shipped only the censored version of the movie to airlines. New Zealand Airline officials said they would replace the censored version with an uncensored one.

Eric Johnston, an attorney with the Southeastern Law Institute in Birmingham, Ala., told the newspaper that airlines, similar to some retail businesses, have a diverse customer base and don't want to offend anyone.

"But I don't agree with that at all," he said. "If the movie industry can use the word 'God,' then certainly the airlines can use it."

"The Queen" -- one of this year's nominees for a best picture Academy Award -- is about the royal family during the days after Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris. Helen Mirren is a best actress nominee, and recently won a Golden Globe award, for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
