Daniel Dae Kim joins ‘Hawaii Five-O’ reboot
Lost star Daniel Dae Kim suits up for the latest issue of DaMan magazine, as captured by celeb photographer Mitchell McCormack.
The 41-year-old actor says that despite his achievements, he has certainly not been immune to the limitations that Hollywood writers and executives seem to place on the roles available to Asian actors, a topic he tackles head-on. “I take a little bit of pride in that I don’t feel like I’ve taken any roles that I regret in terms of cultural representation,” he shares. “I’ve never done the stereotypicalAsian nerd or anything like that. But that’s not to say that there isn’t that kind of dynamic in Hollywood. There is definitely a categorization of Asian males, in particular. What I mean to say is though the roles might not be overtly offensive, they are definitely secondary and exist only to serve another character. For instance, a lot of roles that I have played have been in support of the leads and I was there to deliver exposition. They’re not stereotypical roles but they are representative of a ceiling that a lot of us face.”
According to THR, Daniel Dae is staying in Hawaii after Lost wraps up this season. He snagged himself a lead role on CBS’ remake of the classic cop series Hawaii Five-O.
Daniel Dae will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly while Moonlight actor Alex O’Loughlin is in talks to star as Detective Steve McGarrett.
