Samuel L. Jackson, full name Samuel Leroy Jackson, is an American actor, Academy Award and British Academy of Film and Television Arts winning.
Jackson was born in Washington, D.C, USA, on December 21, 1948, but grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
His mother, Elizabeth Jackson was a factory worker. Jackson met his father just twice during his life, because he lived away from the family in Kansas City, Missouri, and died from alcoholism.
Jackson attended Riverside High School; currently this is Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. Here, between the third and twelfth grades, he played the French horn and trumpet in the school orchestra. Later, Jackson attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia which graduated in 1972.
Jackson’s first role was in A Soldier's Play. But his first feature film was in 1972 when he played in Together for Days. After these initial roles, in 1976, Jackson moved to New York City. This period was the point when Jackson developed an alcohol and cocaine dependence. In 1981, after playing A Soldier's Play, Jackson stared in School Daze and Do the Right Thing, both directed by Spike Lee. But it was just minor roles.
Jackson’s big success came with Jungle Fever movie. For his role, Jackson was awarded in 1991 at Cannes Film Festival with a special "Supporting Actor".
Soon, Jackson became a box office actor, and with this new roles in Sphere, The Negotiator, Deep Blue Sea and Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Jackson made an indelible mark on American cinema with his portrayal of 'Jules', the philosophizing hitman, in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction." He received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations as Best Supporting Actor and the Best Supporting Actor award from the BAFTA.
In 1980, Samuel L. Jackson married actress Latanya Richardson and they have a daughter, Zoe, born in 1982.
