Steve Martin

Stephen Glenn "Steve" Martin was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas, USA. He is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer, musician and composer.

Having developed a reputation for television writing, for such shows as Dick Van Dyke and Sonny & Cher, Martin’s next move was into stand-up comedy. His break into films came in ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ in 1977.

However, it wasn’t until the 80s that he would enjoy a successful run of hits. The films ‘All of Me’, ‘Roxanne’, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ helped make their kooky star a household name.

Martin’s career throughout the 90s continued to blossom in an eclectic way, with successful movies interspersed with less successful ventures. However, ‘Father of the Bride’ and ‘L.A. Story’ both did well at the box office.

He was a favorite recurring guest host on Saturday Night Live for many years. In the 1980s he began starring in mainstream movie comedies like Parenthood (1989) and Father of the Bride (1991).

He proved himself an able writer/director, with successes like Roxanne (1987), LA Story, (1991) and Bowfinger (1999).

Martin is known for his brainy versatility and continues to work in films, write plays, publish humorous essays in the New Yorker magazine, and write books like Shopgirl (2000). His novella ‘Shopgirl’ becoming a best seller in the US.

His other films have included the family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and remake The Pink Panther (2006).

Martin lives in the Los Angeles area with his dog Roger, and two cats, Lucy and Bub. He was honored with the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2005.
