He playing the tormented young pianist David Helfgott in the 1996 film Shine. He also starred in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and historical dramas Max (2002).

He appeared in Vanilla Sky (2002), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and The New World (2005).
