She made her screen debut in Night Moves (1975). She appeared in a number of films as a teenager, then after a gap of four years her adult career commenced with Body Double (1984).

Also she starred in Something Wild (1986) and Working Girl (1988). For Working Girl she received Oscar nomination for Supporting Actress.

She was married to Johnson in 1976, then again from 1989 until 1996, when she married Antonio Banderas.
