Paul Leonard Newman was born January 26, 1925 in Shaker Heights, an affluent suburb of Cleveland, USA. He is an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Cannes Award, and Emmy Award-winning American actor and film director.
He made his film debut in The Silver Chalice for which he received terrible reviews. But Newman proved he had the right stuff with later performances, such as Brick in the film version of Tennessee Williams' play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) opposite Elizabeth Taylor. He scored his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor for this role. Considered an outstanding actor of his generation, he scored three more Oscar nominations for The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963), and Cool Hand Luke (1967). He also played the outlaw Butch Cassidy in the wildly popular film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).
He has been nominated for Best Actor seven other times, for films including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), The Hustler (1961), and Cool Hand Luke (1967). Newman's good looks and extra-blue eyes are famous; he has often played sharp-witted, charming and rascally leading men. With his co-star Robert Redford he was in two of the biggest box office successes in history, 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and 1973's The Sting. He has also directed several films, including Rachel, Rachel (1968), Sometimes A Great Notion (1971) and Harry and Son (1984).
Newman has been married to actress Joanne Woodward since 1958. He and his wife live in Westport, Connecticut.
