Woody Harrelson was born on 23 July 1961 in Midland, Texas, USA. He studied at Hanover College, went into the theatre, and became well known for his role as the bartender in the popular television series Cheers (1983–93).

Woody known almost as much for his off-screen pastimes as his on-screen characterizations, Woody Harrelson is an actor for whom truth is undeniably stranger than fiction. Son of a convicted murderer, veteran of multiple arrests, outspoken environmentalist, and tireless hemp proponent, Harrelson is colorful even by Hollywood standards. However, he is also a strong, versatile actor, something that tends to be obscured by the attention paid to his real-life antics.

His films include Indecent Proposal (1993), Natural Born Killers (1994), The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), The Hi-Lo Country (1999), and North Country (2005). In 1996 he attracted publicity when he was arrested twice as an activist during events drawing attention to endangered forests.

He also starred in A Scanner Darkly (2006) and The Walker (2007).
