Dennis Hopper was born on May 17, 1936 in Dodge City, Kansas. He is an Academy Award-nominated American actor and film-maker.
He started in the movies in the early 1950s, appearing in Johnny Guitar (1953), Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). In the '60s his reputation as a "difficult" actor who favored improvisation kept him from getting many mainstream roles, and he appeared in several low-budget movies, including the "hippie" cult favorites The Trip (1967) and Head (1968).
He caused a sensation with the anti-establishment Easy Rider (1969), the archetypal ‘road’ film in which he directed and starred. Hoosiers (1986) earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Later films include The American Friend (1977), Blue Velvet (1986), Speed (1994), and Land of the Dead (2005). His films as a director include Colors (1988), The Hot Spot (1990), and Chasers (1994).
He also starred in the first season of 24 starred opposite Kiefer Sutherland and as a member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff in the 2005 series E-Ring.
