Robert Redford born on on August 18, 1936, in Santa Barbara, California, USA.
He dropped out of college to study art and acting, and good performances on Broadway and on television led to engagements in Hollywood, but without great success until the film version of his stage role in Barefoot in the Park (1967).
Robert starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), All the President's Men (1976), and Out of Africa (1985).
Later films include Indecent Proposal (1993) and Up Close and Personal (1996). As a director he made the Olympics-based skiing film Downhill Racer in 1969, Ordinary People (1980), and directed A River Runs Through It (1993), acclaimed for its cinematography.
In 1998 he directed and starred in The Horse Whisperer, and later appearances include Spy Game (2001), The Clearing (2003), and An Unfinished Life (2005).
In 1981 he founded the Sundance Institute, dedicated to enriching American cinema; the annual film festival held by Sundance is now a major event.
Redford won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People. Also he was nominated for another Oscar for directing Quiz Show (1994).
