Kate Ashfield was born and brought up in Birmingham.

One of her first roles was Titania in ‘A Midsummer’s Nights Dream’ - the pretty pink dress complete with fairy wings was all a little girl could wish for! After graduating in from college in 1993 she promptly landed her first job as Ella in ‘Princess Caraboo’, starring Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline. This debut was followed by much less glamorous theatre roles where Kate quickly learnt more about the career she had chosen.

She started as Cecily in ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, ‘A Collier’s Friday Night’, ‘Peaches’, ‘Blasted’.

Kate’s next move was to land the role of Irina in Checkhov’s ‘The Three Sisters’ for Max Stafford-Clark’s company Out Of Joint before returning to the Royal Court. Once again she landed herself yet another controversial play, the infamous ‘Shopping & Fucking’ by Mark Ravenhill in which she portrayed the neurotic wannabe actress Lulu.
