Tobey was born in June 1975 to parents - Wendy, a secretary, and Vincent, a cook. They were 18 and 20 and unwed when he was born and within two years they'd married and split, leaving Maguire to ricochet between them, moving constantly around California, Washington, and Oregon.
Tobey started out in the business working the usual commercial and TV-bit circuit. "I did one line on Blossom, a few lines on Roseanne," he remembers. "I played a dead kid on Jake and the Fatman. I think I auditioned for The Wonder Years, like 10 times." He eventually landed a starring role in a Fox sitcom, Great Scott!, but the show was canned in 1992 after nine weeks.
Maguire landed a small role in Empire Records after trying for the lead. During production he ended up leaving the movie. "I was having a rough time communicating with people. I was a little self-destructive. I asked the director [Allan Moyle] to let me go because I wanted to go home and just reevaluate things." He stayed out of the audition circuit for months.
Tobey returned to the scene to play Kate Capshaw's son in Griffin Dunne's Duke of Groove, a short film which received Oscar nomination and raised Maguire's profile. Tobey starred in Joyride a barely seen movie with Wilson Cruz and Amy Hathaway.
We would next see Tobey as a shoesalesman in Deconstructing Harry a 1997 Woody Allen film. The first time he would work with director Ang Lee was in The Ice Storm also 1997 where he played Joan Allen's son, Paul Hood. Tobey's first major starring role was in 1998's Pleasantville in which he starred across Reese Witherspoon. The movie is about a teen brother and sister who are transported back into a 1950's sitcom.
The other film Maguire made in 1998 was the controversial and never seen Don's Plum a short film he appeared in and he ended up in court dispute over whether the film can be shown. (Result: Don's Plum will be shown everywhere except North America).
Tobey starred in 1999's The Cider House Rules based on the novel by John Irving. The movie was a huge sucess being nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture. The movie won 2 awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in 1999's Ride With the Devil another Ang Lee film. Singer/actress Jewel, co-starred in this western-ish drama.
In 2000, Tobey appeared in Curtis Hanson's Wonderboys with Michael Douglas. He played a college student James Leer.
In May 2002, Tobey Maguire played Spider-Man - the movie has had phenominal success breaking virtually every movie milestone. At the box-office the movie has grossed over $800 million worldwide. The success threw Tobey into the media spotlight as he travelled on a promotional tour around the world stopping in Australia, Germany, England and many other countries. Over the summer of 2002 he tasted a bit of perhaps unwanted fame as paparazzi tracked and photographed his many moves. Once the video released in November 2002 it continued to break record sales.
